Knowledgebowl celebrates its 1st place finish.

It was like something out of a movie. Three teams tied going into the final buzzer question, hands hovering over the buzzers, the question is asked and hands slam down, team members discussed for a moment and then the answer came to Hunter Davis. “Hoodwink” was the correct answer.

Of course, as all good movies go, it was the home team that got the nod, the correct answer, and the win.

“We needed to take at least 2nd place in the last round to secure a first place finish, but we were playing from behind and were in 3rd most of the round behind Rapid City Christian and Hill City. We fought back and at the last question, all teams were tied with 12 points. The last question was, “what 8-letter word means ‘to trick’?” said First-year Coach Bob Julius.

“I’m super proud of the way this team has competed all year. In the four meets, we’ve taken two firsts, a second, and a third. In the last round, we started slow and fell behind the other two teams, so it could have been easy to give up, but they stayed in it and fought back to win it. It’s also exciting considering how young our team is!”

Stevens finished with a total of 28.10 points, Spearfish was close behind with 23.20 and Belle Fourche rounded out the top three with 22.70 points.

Team members include Senior Noah Hamilton, juniors Fisher Martenson, Samuel Barnes, and Hunter Davis, and Sophomore Euana Matute.
