Tennis Team Goes Undefeated 2nd Year in a Row

Ryan Chalberg

Stevens celebrates its second State title in as many years.

The Stevens girls’ tennis team has gone undefeated for the past two seasons. There are many committed girls on the team and they are all pretty close. They practice, travel, and compete together, so they know their teammates very well. They have amazing coaches that are committed to helping each individual improve their skills.

Assistant Coach Ryan Chalberg says they have had so much success because there is a large group of girls in the program (48 girls) who all care a lot about each other. It doesn’t matter if you are #1 on the team or #48 on the team, everyone wants to see everyone succeed. The girls play 28 matches, and they play anyone who is willing to play them. He is also very confident in the girls on the team, “The girls know what it takes to be the best and make sacrifices in order to reach the goal we set for ourselves, which is individual success.”

Lindsey Pfingston and Ali Scott, two of the seniors on the team this year, both played in State. They say that they have an emotional connection to the team and the sport. They have both been playing tennis since a very young age, which means they have a lot of experience in the game. Pfingston and Scott practice about 10 hours a week, working on serving, backhands, forehands, and volleys. Each player has a different technique that works best for them. Lindsey says that she just tries to stay focused and consistent. Ali says that she tries to stay quick on her feet, and adds spins. They both are very focused during the game, trying to block out any extra noise. At the end of season their favorite part for Lindsey was being able to go undefeated with her doubles partner Anna Mueller and winning state. Ali’s favorite part was the bus ride to Sioux Falls.

Overall, the Tennis team has had a great last two seasons. They have been undefeated both years. They have supportive coaches and teammates. The coaches are beyond proud of the team, and how hard they have worked, and how focused they are during matches and practices.
