Mrs. Hafner, Mrs. Inman, Mr. Karn and Mrs. Conway celebrate Stevens NHS inductees.
Over the summer, Stevens hired over a dozen new staff members for positions including cafeteria workers, teachers, custodial and administration. Perhaps the biggest shoes to fill were that of outgoing Activities Director, Jared Vasquez.
Interacting with every sport and activity at Stevens High School keeps the Activities Director on their toes. Vasquez’s replacement, Nick Karn, is up for the job. “Going to events is always the highlight of my job, because there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into it. A lot of summer work. And not just for me. For the staff and then coaches, and athletes and players weather fine arts and seeing the band work, orchestra, choir.”
In his first year at Stevens, Karn is looking towards the future, “I’ve always been a big rugby fan, you know, I have to gage the community and kind of see who is interested in what, but my ultimate goal is to get every single student in this school in something. Whether that be a sport, or fine arts, music, whatever that can be. And we all have different interest so I’m looking to try to, and this is before I got here but I would have done it anyway, is esports.”
While esports is still working its way through the South Dakota High School Activities Association, it is already on the radar here, “We would need to have the technology and the funding and all of that stuff.” Karn said. He is also working to implement Athlete of the Week and a Stevens Activities Leadership Team.
Karn comes from Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he has served as an athletic director, football coach, dean of students and teacher at several schools over the past decade. Most importantly, he is a really nice guy that is easy to talk to and easy to find common ground with.
