The prospect of choosing a college, junior college, tech school, work, or military can be a daunting one for seniors. While some struggle, others have it figured out early. Then there are students like Merit Haas. Not only does she have a plan in life, it requires her to cross the pond for college.
Hass plans on attending the University of Glasgow, Scotland to study human biology and nutrition.
She chose this school because, “it is in a city so greatly populated with students and all of their science
and research departments are beyond phenomenal with the newest technology and resources”.
Coming from Rapid City, Hass looks forward to exploring a bigger city and meeting new people. “I think I am most excited for all the people I am going to meet and new things I’m going to be able to try. There are so many unique club and group opportunities both academic and for fun that no moment will feel empty or wasted”.
Moving to another country by yourself seems to be overwhelming and impossible. Hass says that, “Travel has always been a big part of who I am and exploring all different aspects of live and how other people live is one of my favorite things to do. Choosing to move to Europe for college will enable me to live a completely new lifestyle and experience so many new cultures as I will already be so much closer to so many other countries that are new and exciting to see”.
Hass wasn’t alone in her decision. There are a few students who has decided to start a new chapter in a new country. Some advice she would like to share to other students looking at traveling for college is,
“look into every opportunity you might see or have interest in. It might not seem like there is a way for
everything to work out or be manageable in reality but diving in deeper you will probably find so many
different ways to approach the university or opportunity you might be dreaming of. Just a little bit of
research opens countless doors so don’t hesitate to do even a little digging”.
