From a rundown van that he bought for only $500, to an insane renovation, a cozy camping spot, and a sustainable business, Mateo Vergas has turned an unfortunate circumstance into something truly impressive. When his car broke down, an opportunity popped up for Mateo. His buddy, Peyton Shaw, who’s helped him with his renovation process, told him about his neighbor who was selling his old van. At first, Mateo had his doubts about the vehicle. Why would he drive around an ugly, beaten-down van? But he gave it a second thought, and he came up with the idea of renovating. And so, the process began in February of 2024.
Anytime he had the time, Mateo was renovating the van, but he wasn’t working alone. He had a support system- Ulysses Kliegel, Lewis Carlyse, Connor Hislip, Peyton Shaw, Campbell Carcamo, Leia Romero, and others. Together, they learned carpentry, electricity, problem-solving, car mechanics, and most importantly teamwork. The motivation of going wherever they wanted to drove the group to renovate. Today, the van has a king-sized bed, which Mateo put in himself, electricity, flooring, drawers, and a PlayStation and XBOX. Their future plans are to insulate the walls, replace the windshield, put in new doors, paint the exterior, put in a new sound system, and of course start their business.
Their idea of starting a vintage clothes business started with Campbell, and it has since grown. The group have always had an interest in fashion and reselling online, but when they saw a college student selling vintage clothes out of his van, their idea became set. They’re hoping to start in early October, selling clothes they find online and at local thrifts. Mateo says their most challenges aspect of the business are the communication and time management; their business goals are to create a consistent schedule, find pop-up locations, and manage their supply. Mateo says they can’t wait to start selling- and I can’t either. Mateo and his friends have the coolest style I’ve seen, and I believe their business could go far. I’ll be the first in line when they open, and I hope to see fellow raiders supporting them too.
