Have you ever experienced something traumatic in a classroom?
On Monday, October 7th around 11:30 a.m. one of Mrs. Dame’s windows shattered. This was a result of an ongoing football game happening in the courtyard. A body hit the window while trying to catch the ball, and the window came crashing down.
When this incident occurred, there were English 11 students in Mrs. Dame’s room. Many students were remarkably close to the shattered glass, and two were inches away from being hit. “Holy cow, what was that?” thought Mrs. Dame.
Zoey Wick was one of the students that was only inches away from being hit with the massive shards of glass, “I did not even know what was going on! I just heard a loud noise behind me!” If Mrs. Dame did not have her window blind partially down; the glass could have seriously injured Zoey along with other students.
Those who were in the room said that it scared them and that it happened very quickly which did not give people a lot of time to react. People were also very shocked because many thought that those windows were supposed to be bulletproof.
Originally some students thought that something else was going on and were scared that it was something more serious. Junior Kai Unrein stated, “I thought it was a gun shot, or an explosion and I jumped and fell out of my chair.” But Dame did not. “I did not think that anything else was going on, I knew that they were playing football out there and I was used to getting my window hit. The noise and the impact were different, but no, I did not think it was something else,” she reflected. The noise was extremely loud and scared everyone in the class, but thankfully nobody
was seriously injured.
The window that was broken was a very large and thick window. Currently the window is all boarded up with wood, so the space is protected. “Hagen glass told me that it would be 3-4 weeks before it would be replaced, which would get us to early November. Hopefully, the snow doesn’t fly by then,” said Dame. These windows are quoted to be around $1500 to replace. “I was shocked and feel bad for whoever has to pay for it,” commented Zoey. On the contrary, Kai stated “I was not surprised, they are big windows.”
While this incident was very serious, many things could have ended a lot worse, but thankfully things ended in the best-case scenario. Dame handled this situation extremely well and the students are grateful that she was concerned about their safety. We hope that something like this will not happen again, but if it does, teacher and students now know how to handle it properly, and how to prioritize the student’s safety.
